We began by exploring how many drops of water we could fit on top of a penny using an eyedropper. Some students were able to fit more than 20 drops.
We then did an experiment called "paper chromatography".
We drew a line on a small piece of paper coffee filter using a black wet erase marker. We put just the tip of the filter into a shallow dish of water and watched the water move up the filter.
As the water went up the filter, it separated the colors in the black marker. The students were pretty amazed by this experiment. They thought black was only black, not many other colors mixed together!
These are the marker and filter that we used. We cut the filter into smaller pieces. Some students want to try it again at home!
